The Record the Bond Market Refused to Believe

The Jobs Report
Hiring Nearly Stopped. Stocks Hit a Record.
The economy added 29,000 jobs in September. Wall Street heard ‘no rate hike’ and rallied. The bond market heard something it didn’t like.
Two markets read the same report Friday. One threw a party. The other refused to move. That gap is the whole story.
Key Idea
A near-frozen job market is not a green light. It is half of stagflation. The Fed almost certainly holds rates on October 28. That is the good news Wall Street bought. But the 30-year Treasury yield sat at 5.63% while stocks ran to records. When hiring collapses and long rates refuse to fall, the bond market is telling you inflation, not growth, runs this economy. You are being handed a record built on the happy half of that sentence.

Trump’s approval is at 36%. Midterms are seven months away. He needs a move that changes everything overnight.
He has one. It doesn’t require Congress. It could add over $1 trillion to the government’s balance sheet and potentially make a large number of everyday Americans very wealthy.
A president used this same move once before in 1934. It created generational fortunes. A free report explains what it is and how to get positioned before he plays it.

The Number
The Labor Department reported 29,000 new jobs for September. Forecasts called for roughly three times that. The unemployment rate rose to 4.2% from 4.1%.
Then came the revisions. July was cut to a loss of 10,000 jobs. That is the first negative month since February. August dropped to 133,000 from 162,000.
Read that again. The economy did not cool. It nearly stopped hiring. Private employers carried the entire gain. Government cut 17,000 jobs. Tech, finance, and information fields have shed more than 259,000 positions in a year.
Hiring this weak usually shows up in a recession. Friday it showed up next to a record close. That is not a contradiction. That is a warning the tape ignored.
The data confirms what the country already feels. An economy that 63% of Americans say is headed in the wrong direction.
Watch jobless claims. Watch the Fed minutes Wednesday afternoon.

What The Bond Market Saw
Stocks surged. The 10-year Treasury yield barely moved, up 0.04 to 5.28%. The 30-year held at 5.63%. That is near the highest since 2007.
The 30-year yield is what lenders charge Washington to borrow for three decades. When jobs fall apart, that number should drop as investors brace for a slowdown. It didn’t.
Here’s where it gets interesting. A clean slowdown pulls long yields down. These held firm. The bond market is saying inflation is the bigger threat. Wages grew about 3% over the year. Prices ran 3.4%. Your paycheck is losing the race. Crude oil sits above $100 a barrel. You have felt this mix before. Walmart, the war in Iran, and a margarita on the beach.
So the Fed can skip its hike and still leave your mortgage, your car loan, and your credit-card rate pinned at punishing levels. A pause is not relief. It is a ceiling.
We told you in June the 30-year was the variable to watch. It sat at 5.10% then. It is higher now.

Where It Lands On You
Your 401(k) statement looks terrific this morning. The Nasdaq is at an all-time high. Nvidia alone is worth $5.72 trillion.
Now check your last grocery receipt. Inflation at 3.4% is still eating the raise you probably didn’t get. That is the split screen of this market.
Gold closed near $4,177 an ounce. Up roughly 25% since early 2025. That is not a trade. That is a quiet vote against paper money, and it is being cast at full volume. Hold it long enough and you know the drill. They Called You Wrong for 10 Years.

The Party The Bond Market Skipped
Two trades ran Friday. Equity desks bought the ‘no hike.’ Bond desks didn’t flinch. When stocks and the long bond disagree this loudly, the bond market usually wins the argument.
Think about the setup. A record stock close. A 5.63% 30-year yield. Payrolls under 30,000. Those three rarely share a calendar. Something gives. Either growth reaccelerates and Warsh hikes anyway. Or the stall deepens and earnings forecasts are too high. Friday’s record is priced for neither.

Three Ways This Breaks
Base
The Fed holds on October 28 and the minutes read balanced. Rate-sensitive megacap tech stays in charge. If you own Nvidia (NVDA), Microsoft (MSFT), or the Nasdaq through QQQ, this is your tape. Trim the most expensive momentum into strength. Keep cash earning 5% while it still pays you.
Upside
Wednesday’s minutes sound dovish and the September CPI on October 14 cools. The 10-year breaks below 5.2%. The rally broadens. Small caps (IWM), homebuilders (ITB), and beaten-down fintech like SoFi (SOFI) wake up. Megacap tech still runs. This is the melt-up case, and weak jobs would fuel it.
Risk
Size this one. CPI runs hot on October 14 or the minutes sound hawkish. The 30-year pushes toward 5.8%. Suddenly 29,000 jobs reads as a stall, not a gift. Expect a 3% to 5% pullback in the Nasdaq over one to two weeks, deeper in unprofitable tech. Weak jobs have cracked markets before. Last time, the Fed cut to the rescue. This time inflation at 3.4% ties Warsh’s hands. Hedge with gold (GLD), energy (XLE), and short-term Treasuries. That missing backstop is what makes this record fragile.
Our View
We’ve said since June that the 30-year yield sets the ceiling, not the Fed’s next move. Friday proved it. Stocks got their ‘no hike’ and still couldn’t drag long rates down.
Here is the part the headlines missed. Weak jobs used to mean rate cuts and a melt-up. Under Warsh, with inflation at 3.4%, weak jobs mean stagflation risk and a central bank that cannot respond. That is a harder setup than a plain slowdown.
Own the records. But own gold and energy beside them. There is a political wild card too. The Fed Is Praying Trump Doesn’t Sign This. And be at your screen Wednesday at 2 p.m. Warsh has been quiet. You are about to hear exactly how worried his Fed is.
