AI Earnings Week

CoreWeave’s Bonds Hit 16%. SpaceX Reports Tomorrow.

Last week the AI trade stopped being graded on demand. It is now graded against a 5% hurdle.

Monday, October 19, 2026 • Nasdaq −4.5% last week • 10-year at 5.09% • SpaceX, Meta and Tesla report by Wednesday night

Key Idea

Last week the market stopped asking whether AI works. It started asking what AI costs to finance.

A 10-year Treasury now pays you 5.09%. That’s the hurdle. Every AI dollar must beat it.

SpaceX reports tomorrow night. Meta and Tesla report Wednesday. Three report cards, all graded against 5%.

The Week the Bill Came Due

The Nasdaq lost 4.5% last week. The Dow gained 0.7% over the same five sessions.

That gap shows you where the pain lived. Chips and AI infrastructure. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index shed more than $1.6 trillion in six sessions. That’s the benchmark for chipmakers, from Nvidia to Micron.

AI’s next bottleneck may be electricity, not chips. One research firm points to Arizona:

[Grand Canyon Discovery Could Power America](https://go.elitemarketpoint.com/FLERBM4666L1?ref=elitemarketpoint.ghost.io) →

The trigger was CoreWeave. That’s a “neocloud,” a company that rents Nvidia chips to AI developers and buys them largely with borrowed money. It carries about $50 billion in debt.

The stock fell more than 15% Wednesday. It fell another 12% Friday.

Then the bonds cracked. CoreWeave’s notes due 2031 yielded above 16% by Thursday. Its credit default swaps imply roughly a 63% chance of default within five years. That’s the price lenders pay to insure against a default.

Read that again. Worse than a coin flip, on one of AI’s biggest landlords.

By Friday’s close, Apple was the only Magnificent Seven stock still green. That’s the seven tech giants that anchor your index fund.

Not every AI bet runs through a rented data center.

$200 trillion AI “treasure map”

A Pentagon AI system just uncovered 184,000 hidden gold sites across America. It also found hidden copper, silver, and a whole host of other resources. The end result? An AI “treasure map” that could be worth as much as $200 TRILLION. [See how you can claim your stake of this treasure here.](https://go.elitemarketpoint.com/SRRG2112?ref=elitemarketpoint.ghost.io)

The 5% Hurdle

Here’s where it gets interesting. Nobody reported weak AI orders last week. The selloff was about money.

September CPI came in at 3.7%. Up from 3.4%. Core inflation hit 2.6%. That’s the measure that strips out food and energy.

You felt it at the pump. AAA’s national average was $4.33 a gallon on CPI day. It was $2.98 before the Iran war.

The 10-year Treasury spiked to 5.33% after the print. It closed the week above 5.09%. That’s the rate your mortgage quote follows. Traders now price an 89% chance the Fed hikes again in December. The Fed already hiked in September, to 3.75%–4%.

Think about that for a second. A government bond pays you 5% with no business risk. So every dollar sunk into data centers must earn more than 5% to justify itself.

CoreWeave’s bonds yield 16%. Its hurdle is three times higher.

At the IMF meetings in Bangkok last week, Fed Chair Kevin Warsh gave no signal on rates. “We’re not in that business anymore,” he said.

No guidance. No cushion.

That is the new math inside your brokerage app. Growth alone no longer clears the bar. Return on capital does.

Return on capital is the bar now. Here is one private company’s scorecard.

A Private Coffee Company Already Stocked in 3,000+ Stores

Green Coffee Company remains a private company, and the coffee it sells already sits on shelves in 3,000+ stores in 21 states.

For scale, Starbucks ran about 140 of its own stores when it went public in June 1992\. The counts measure different things, since this company sells through other retailers, and neither predicts a share price.

Revenue reached $26 million in 2025, up from $1 million in 2021\. Individual investors can join at $1.15 a share, from a $1,000.50 minimum.

Three Report Cards by Wednesday Night

**SpaceX, Tuesday after the close.** Shares closed Friday at $146.03\. Down 10.6% since last Monday. Still above the $135 IPO price.

Last quarter shows you what to watch. Revenue: $7.8 billion. Up 92%. Net loss: $541 million. The AI segment booked $2.56 billion in revenue. That’s its AI computing business, including the Grok chatbot it bought from xAI. It posted a $1.26 billion operating loss.

And it spent $15.8 billion on capital expenditures in one quarter. That’s money spent on chips, servers and data centers.

Run the hurdle math. At 5.09%, that single quarter of AI spending must earn about $800 million a year just to match a Treasury. Watch whether the AI loss narrows.

**Meta, Wednesday after the close.** Wall Street expects $6.28 a share on $63.32 billion in revenue. Meta guided 2026 capex at $130 billion to $145 billion. At the top end, that spending needs roughly $7.4 billion a year in returns just to beat Treasuries.

**Tesla, also Wednesday.** Consensus: 43 cents a share. Revenue: $27.9 billion. Goldman says robotaxi and Optimus updates matter more than the quarter.

SpaceX reports tomorrow. Some analysts are watching a smaller Musk supplier instead.

Read the Bonds, Not the Stock

Stock traders argue about the story. Bond traders price whether they get paid back. Last week, the bond side spoke loudest.

That hands you a warning gauge most investors never check. If CoreWeave’s 2031 bond yield eases back toward the low teens after Meta reports, the AI build-out has regained its financing. If it climbs past 20%, the next leg down starts in credit. Not in Nvidia.

The Dow’s cash-flow names gained while the Nasdaq bled. The market pays for earnings it can count today.

Two tests hit retirement accounts this fall: AI earnings and the midterms.

Retirement planning takes decades. Elections can change policy in a single night.

With debt at $40 trillion and both parties making competing promises, it is understandable to wonder whether taxes, spending, and retirement rules could shift again.

Three Plans for This Week

Base

SpaceX narrows its AI loss. Meta beats and holds its capex range. The Nasdaq stabilizes but stays below last week’s levels into the Oct. 27–28 Fed meeting.

If you own QQQ, the Nasdaq-100 fund, hold. Don’t add. Keep the barbell: energy through XLE while Brent sits near $108, plus Dow industrials. Trim leveraged AI landlords like CoreWeave (CRWV) and Nebius (NBIS) into any bounce.

Upside

Meta shows ad growth that covers its spending. SpaceX’s AI revenue outruns its losses. December hike odds fade.

The hurdle drops. Chips snap back hardest: the SOXX semiconductor fund, Nvidia (NVDA), Micron (MU). Add Thursday, after both reports land.

Risk

Meta lifts capex above $145 billion without matching revenue. Or SpaceX’s AI loss widens. Then the market reprices every AI spender at once.

If your 401(k) leans growth, raise some cash. T-bill funds like SGOV pay close to the Fed’s 3.75%–4% range while you wait. Procter & Gamble (PG) reports Thursday morning. That’s your defensive test.

Our View

We told you earnings season would decide this quarter. Now you know the exact question. Does AI earn more than 5%?

The hurdle is not fixed. Two levers move it this week, and only one sits in Silicon Valley.

The other is diesel. Trump waived new Russia sanctions and tariffs Friday night. Brent slid toward $108 in Asian trading. If fuel keeps falling, inflation cools. December hike odds fade. The 5% hurdle drops for every AI spender at once.

So watch two screens Wednesday night. Meta’s capex line. And the sign at your local gas station.

The AI trade needs both to cooperate.
